Denotation: In this magazine cover there’s a photograph of a man, this is a medium shot photograph of a man who is holding books and bits of work I assume for college the man in the photo seems to be happy with what he does in college.
Mise-en-scene:
Costume: the man in the photograph is wearing a Morden black casual jacket which is purposely open to show the silver or maybe white gold chain with an cross as an pendent maybe to symbolise his religious, under the black jacket he is wearing and plain white fresh t-shirt which helps his chain stand out also we see he is wearing an wrist watch on his left wrist. Further down the man in photograph is wearing darkish grey jeans with a black belt with silver cross the buckle. This is a medium camera shot.
Props: the prop in this magazine cover is hand held books and paper, this is the only props in this magazine cover. This is used well as it gives you that whole college sense.
Setting: could be in a photograph studio somewhere in college as we can tell from the back ground he must have been standing in front of a screen.
Lighting: the photograph of the man in the magazine cover has a light key lighting where as its practically free of shadow the photograph is in fact vivid an clear.
NVC (Non Verbal Communication):
The body language of the man in the magazine cover tells me that he is happy with doing education and what he is doing in college, his body is also upright which sends signs of confidence. From the man’s’ facial expression in the photograph the information I get from the not over exaggerated smile, is that this man is doing well and is comfortable with what his doing in college.
Anchorage: the anchorage of this photo written in sans serif fonts is ‘college lifestyle’ which makes us understand the concept of this photograph because as we can see the prop the man is holding is ‘law business and society’ paper work.
Masthead: The masthead of this magazine says ‘College’, the design of this type face isn’t really unique but is simply there, easy to identify in the big green bold letters. This is used well as its used to blend in with the other colours of the magazine, but on the other hand there’s is a drawback to this part of the magazine where as you can’t see two of the letters as the photograph of the man is covering the missing letters.
Cover lines: The first cover line states: ‘why we love blackberry?’ This is a rhetorical question a good way to start a cover line and attract an audience especially because blackberry is the trends in the modern day to adults an particularly college aged children so it would make the audience want to read more about it.
The Second cover line ‘make money on campus’ this is another good cover line due to because people always want to make money somehow some way so giving advice on how to make money would attract everyone as money is the main objective of education.
Lastly ‘jump up& wave’ this to me has to meanings; first meaning would be the end of the college life or secondly jumping up with excitement for making it to the college life.
Date line: This magazine was done in the ‘summer 2009’ this magazine is unusual as the pricing an date is usually together. This magazine is priced $5.99 for U.S and $4.99 Canada.
Barcode: barcode is at the bottom left of the magazine.
Selling Line: ‘your exclusive guide to everything hip hop & happening’ this is an short description of what’s inside of the magazine. This tells me its targeting a wide range of an audience who like music and modern things.
Main Image: a photograph of a young black male dressed casually with a fairly wide smile. This photograph is put directly in the middle of the page because it’s the picture that’s meant to steal the audience’s attention. This could be to show the college isn’t racist, has all different coloured people in the college.
Main cover line: the main cover line of this magazine says ‘dancehalls future’ this is there to tell us there’s a future for this college and what to expect.
